Belize Has Forests?

I wanted to take a moment to share something that's been on my mind lately: Belize’s forests. Now, I know when people think of Belize, the first thing that comes to mind is the beach. Don’t get me wrong, the coastlines here are incredible. But there’s another side to this country that often gets overlooked—the forests. And believe me, they’re just as stunning.

Belize has changed so much from when I first visited Belize in 2010, but it wasn’t just the beaches that drew me in. It was the untamed beauty of the forests, the peace and quiet you can’t find anywhere else. I can tell you from personal experience that there’s something special about these places. It’s where I go to take my family, recharge, and take in the beauty. It is just you, birds, maybe a howler monkey and mother nature.

These forests aren’t just for nature lovers, though. If you’re considering owning property here, they offer a unique investment opportunity. Imagine waking up to the sounds of nature or owning a piece of land where eco-tourism is booming. Whether you’re considering building a home or starting a retreat, there’s so much potential here.

Broadleaf Forests: Found in northern Belize in areas like Orange Walk and Corozal, these forests thrive in limestone soils and are home to wildlife like jaguars and howler monkeys.

Tropical Rainforests: Located in southern Belize, west of Punta Gorda, these rainforests are rich with biodiversity, home to species like toucans and tapirs.

Mangrove Ecosystems: Lining Belize’s eastern coastline, from Ambergris Caye to south of Dangriga, these mangroves protect shorelines and provide breeding grounds for marine life.

Pine Forests: Found in the Maya Mountains in western Belize, particularly in the Mountain Pine Ridge, these forests grow in acidic soils and support unique species like the endangered Belizean pine.

Forest Cover Loss

Despite the beauty, Belize has experienced significant forest loss, with around 3,020 square kilometers (1,170 square miles) of forest cover disappearing between 2001 and 2023. Factors like agricultural expansion and natural events such as wildfires and hurricanes have played a part. But here’s the good news: Belize is making strides in conservation, and there are growing efforts to protect and preserve these vital ecosystems.

However, there are a few trade-offs to consider. When you move into a Belize forest, you’re gaining tranquility, privacy, and natural beauty, but you may be giving up easy access to conveniences like grocery stores, restaurants, or even a nearby community. Plus, depending on your health or personal needs, it's important to think about how close you need to be to medical care. Hospitals and doctors’ offices aren’t always within a quick drive, so if that’s something that factors into your decision, it’s worth thinking through.
