Explore Belize in 14 Days

Ever wondered how I came to live in Placencia? You can do it just like I did back in the early 2000's. You can embark on a two-week journey through Belize, a country that perfectly blends cultural richness and natural wonders. From exploring ancient Mayan ruins to relaxing on serene beaches, this comprehensive guide will help you experience the best of Belize, just like I did.

BelizeExperience the Cultural Diversity

Despite its modest size, Belize offers a world of adventure. Home to numerous Mayan sites and a diverse ecosystem, it's a paradise for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Belize's mix of languages, thanks to its history as British Honduras, includes English, Spanish, Creole, Maya, and others. This blend of languages creates a friendly and diverse atmosphere where everyone gets along no matter what your race, social background, religion, sexual orientation, etc...

Traveling in Belize: Tips for a Smooth Journey

  • Public Transport vs. Car Rental: While chicken buses are a cultural experience in Belize, they often are crammed full of people, have zero legroom, and are not fun with luggage. Taxis or private drivers can be hired but can be a more expensive route, especially for multi-hour journeys. Renting a car offers convenience, especially for longer journeys while enjoying the scenic routes. Planes are a bit more expensive but you get to see Belize from the air and you get to your destination much faster.
  • Currency Convenience: The official exchange rate is permanently set at 2 Belize dollars to 1 U.S. dollar, which makes currency conversion calculations particularly simple. Pretty much all places will take USD if it is in good shape, USD is widely accepted across Belize. Be mindful most places will not accept USD if the money is torn, written on or in bad shape.

14-Day Itinerary in Belize

You need to feel or get the vibe of a place. You can’t do that in hitting 4 or 5 places in 2 weeks. I think no less than 5-7 days per location. A lot of people looking for a property will try each location they are trying to rule out or rule in. If you are coming for vacation, then you may try a Jungle, or sea vacation. Or like the sample below is a few days in each location to see the most. Full disclosure some of the places people I own - or own-units in. Reach out for discounts and always best to book directly with the hotel, not through an Online Travel Agency (OTA)

  • Days 1-3 - San Ignacio: Explore the Xunantunich ruins and the ATM Caves. Enjoy local cuisine at Guava Limb and relax at Pine Ridge Lodge.
  • Day 4 - Rainforest Retreat: Travel the scenic Hummingbird Highway, visit the Belize Zoo, and stay in a Rainforest Lodge for a night.
  • Day 5 - Hopkins and Cockscomb Basin: Visit Hopkins, hike in Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve. Created as a sanctuary for endangered jaguars, the unique 400km² reserve is the only jaguar preserve in the world. If your wanting to spend a night in Hopkins check out the Palma D'Oro Cabanas for a night.
  • Days 6-7 - Placencia at Mariposa: From Hopkins its just an hour’s drive along the highway and the scenic ocean road to Placencia. Discover the charming beach town of Placencia. Stay at Mariposa, renowned for its welcoming ambiance, beachfront beauty, and the best staff waiting on your every need. Placencia is also a great place to go diving with whale sharks in Belize. Visit Gladden Split between April to June for a chance to swim alongside these gentle giants.
  • Days 8-10 - San Pedro at Mahogany Bay Village: Journey to San Pedro and check into Mahogany Bay Village. Immerse yourself in luxury, while enjoying the best beach in San Pedro. Then explore the vibrant night life the town has to offer. Music every night of the week.
  • Days 11-13 - Caye Caulker: Relax and enjoy snorkeling, diving, and the laid-back island lifestyle. Take a day to visit Ambergris Caye and fly over the Great Blue Hole.
  • Day 14 - Belize City: Conclude your trip in Belize City, if you have some extra time before your flight I recommend soaking in the colonial charm before you leave and make sure to stay at the Black Orchid Resort on the Belize River.

Embrace the Spirit of Belize

Belize offers more than just stunning destinations; it's an adventure of a lifetime. Every day brings a new discovery, whether you're snorkeling in beautiful reefs or stepping back in time at ancient ruins.

Savor every moment in Belize and remember the local motto, 'Go Slow.' This journey is about embracing the beauty and diversity of Belize in all its forms.
