Safety in Belize

As we know Belize is a breathtaking destination with much to offer to the discerning traveler and investor. However, like any travel destination, it's important to navigate with awareness. Here's what you need to know:

• General Safety: Belize is a safe place for travelers, especially when sticking to well-known tourist areas. Of the 14+ years I have been here I have only had one bike stolen and that was when I didn’t lock it up for the night. Being aware of your surroundings and taking standard safety precautions will make your trip to Belize safe and you’ll have ease of mind. For example, when going to an ATM, put cash and cards up before you leave the ATM. When you leave your rental make sure you lock the doors and windows and when you sleep,

• Areas of Caution: Some parts of Belize City, particularly the south side, have been noted for higher crime rates. Opting for reputable tours and staying in recommended areas can help ensure a pleasant visit. When you do a quick google search the per capita crime rate can be a bit daunting, but because of our relatively small population in Belize, that rate can be a bit skewed. When looking at the main areas of crime it is mostly domestic abuse, drug, or gang related. Violent crime has been down the last 2 years.

Safety Checklist for Belize

• Research and Plan: Familiarize yourself with the areas you plan to visit. Stick to well-reviewed and tourist-friendly locales.

• Use Reputable Transport: Opt for transport services recommended by your accommodation or trusted local guides. This is particularly important for airport transfers and tours. Note: All taxis must use green license plates. If someone claims to be a taxi and does not have a green license plate, do not get into that car.

• Secure Your Belongings: Utilize hotel safes for valuable items and carry copies of important documents when out. Consider using money belts or anti-theft bags.

• Be Tech-Savvy: Use GPS and map apps to navigate safely. Avoid displaying expensive gadgets conspicuously and since Belize doesn't support US phone carriers make sure to download a Google Map of Belize so you can navigate easily.

• Health Care: Ensure you have reliable access to essential healthcare services. While Belize may not be renowned for its healthcare, it efficiently handles minor medical needs, from treating common ailments like the flu to performing routine procedures, such as a recent root canal my son-in-law experienced locally. For more significant health concerns, I typically go to a preferred hospital in Mexico. These healthcare facilities are equipped with specialized doctors and state-of-the-art equipment.
